چکیده

This paper gives a brief introduction on the background and current status of landslides along mountain roads in Taiwan and presents a detailed analysis based on the Gaussian Process model for predicting locations and occurrence times of future landslides using historical data. Based on inherent and man-made features of failed and not-failed slopes, locations of possible future landslides are predicted. Together with historical rainfall data, a rainfall fragility graph is established. The analysis results show that the Gaussian Process model is effective in predicting landslide potentials and probabilities. Comparisons of the Gaussian Process analysis and the discriminant function analysis are made, which show that the former outperforms the latter in many aspects. The results are valuable for predicting where and when landslides would occur in future heavy rainfalls.

Seismologically determined bedload flux during the typhoon season

Continuous seismic records near river channels can be used to quantify the energy induced by river sediment transport. During the 2011 typhoon season, we deployed a seismic array along the Chishan River in the mountain area of southern Taiwan, where there is strong variability in water discharge and high sedimentation rates. We observe hysteresis in the high-frequency (5-15 Hz) seismic noise le...

Comparison and Evolution of Extreme Rainfall-Induced Landslides in Taiwan

This study analyzed the characteristics of, and locations prone to, extreme rainfall-induced landslides in three watersheds in Taiwan, as well as the long-term evolution of landslides in the Laonong River watershed (LRW), based on multiannual landslide inventories during 2003–2014. Extreme rainfall-induced landslides were centralized beside sinuous or meandering reaches, especially those with l...

Landslide and Debris Flow Characteristics during Extreme Rainfall in Taiwan

As the global climate changes, the threat from landslides and debris flows increases. Learning how a watershed initiates landslides under abnormal rainfall conditions and predicting landslide magnitude and frequency distribution is thus important. Landslides show a power-law distribution in the frequency-area distribution. The distribution curve shows an exponent gradient 1.0 in the Sandpile mo...

Physical and maximum entropy models applied to inventories of hillslope sediment sources

Purpose The purpose of our study was to identify major hillslope sediment sources in a partially urbanized coastal watershed supporting salmonid habitat and to evaluate the use of physical and maximum entropy models in predicting sites of greatest concern. Questions include when and where increased runoff from trail and unpaved road surfaces has influenced patterns of landslides and gullies to ...

Vegetation recovery assessment at the Jou-Jou Mountain landslide area caused by the 921 Earthquake in Central Taiwan

The catastrophic earthquake, 7.3 on the Richter scale, occurred on September 21, 1999. The 921 Earthquake was a terrifying disaster that caused numerous casualties in Central Taiwan. It is the severest earthquake in a recent hundred years. The land morphology and topography changed greatly with such features as land upheaval, river blockades and lakes dammed by debris in many locations. Severe ...
